ATTRACTION FROM WEST SUMBAWA

Barapan Kebo (buffalo race) is a cultural attraction mostly by the people of Samawa Tribe.This event is usually conducted during the beginning of rice planting season and after harvesting period.The buffalos that will follow the race will be chosen among the healthy,strong and trained.

Prior to the race,the buffalos will be decorated and before they enter the arena there will be a ritual procession by a soothsyaer.Another race in West Sumbawa is chicken race,pigeon race,and tradition sampan race mostly conducted in Lebo Lake.

TRADITION AND CULTURE

West Sumbawa with its Samawa ethnic as its main population possesses various specific tradition and culture.The wedding and festive ceremony with its unique and interesting ritual is part of its culture inherited from generation to generation still preserved in this region.Art dences followed by the sound of drums,its events are combined with cultural processions conducted by the Samawa people.

Sasak Tribe,as the second largest ethnic after Samawa Tribe prevail similar original culture as in Lombok Island.In every cultural ceremony such as weddings,festive or hair cuts,the sound of beleq drums has always been utilized for these ritual ceremonial events.

Cultural assimilation has also occurred here.Every cultural ceremony in West Sumbawa District will be participated and actively assisted by all the other tribes,including participation through their own creativity.
